How to Clean Polished Concrete Floors

by | Jun 22, 2018 | Polished Concrete Floors

Polished Concrete floors are an excellent option for most shop owners because they are extremely durable and low-maintenance. Nobody wants to spend more time than they have to sweep and mop their floors. Scrubbing them on your hands and knees can be a thing of the past when you choose concrete floors that don’t require much from you. If you’re ready to keep your home looking great without all the effort, it’s time for you to learn how to clean concrete properly.

Before you get started, you need to arm yourself with a few basic items. Head to the store to purchase these items if you need to:

  • Broom and dustpan
  • Dish soap
  • Mop
  • Hard-bristled broom

Remove all of the surface dirt and debris

No matter how much traffic your floor gets, you are bound to have a lot of surface dirt and debris. Your clients might drop coffee or iced tea all over the floor. Regardless of what is spilled on the floor, you need to get up as much of the surface debris as possible. A broom and dustpan tend to work the best for this. However, you might also choose to vacuum the center of the floor and sweep only around the perimeter.

Prepare your soap

Did you think you needed a fancy cleaner to keep your concrete floors in shape? Don’t head out and buy the fanciest specialty cleaner you can find. Plain dish soap and warm water will work just as well to clean up your concrete. In a large bucket, combine a few tablespoons of dish soap with warm water until the bucket is mostly full. Mix it around to make sure it is evenly distributed.

Start mopping

You might have a harder time with this step if you aren’t used to using a mop. In fact, you wouldn’t even be alone in that because only slightly more than half of all people regularly use a mop to clean their home. Dip it into the soapy water mixture and wring it out before setting it on the floor. Scrub vigorously to loosen up the dirt that is stuck to the surface of your concrete floors. It’s usually best to start with the farthest part of the room and work your way back to the door. This prevents you from having to walk back over the freshly mopped area you finished cleaning already.

Burnishing

However, the far most effective and simple way to keep your polished floor looking brand new is to use an electric burnisher.  Using a white pad or a special diamond pad, this method keeps water off the floor, while loosening the dust that has built up!

If you have a particularly difficult time removing a stain, add a little bit of the soapy water mixture to the floor. Using the hard-bristled brush, you can scrub at the stain. Usually, the extra elbow grease is sufficient to remove stubborn stains.

Taking care of concrete floors don’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. You can clean them in very little time and make them shine like new.
