What Are Metallic Epoxy Floors?
Metallic epoxy floors are epoxy resin-based flooring systems that use metallic pigments to create a three-dimensional, flowing look. The aesthetic of metallic epoxy floors is sometimes compared to marble, flowing water, lava, clouds, or molten metal.
Every metallic epoxy floor coating is unique; as the epoxy flows before curing, the metallic pigments move around, creating different patterns. The flow of epoxy can be influenced, but not completely controlled; the skill of your installer will dictate how well your flooring system will match your vision.
At TCF West, we have decades of experience installing metallic epoxy floors; tell us the kind of flooring you want to see, and we’ll bring your vision to life.
Benefits Of Metallic Epoxy Flooring
Modern & Unique Aesthetic
Want your floor to be a statement piece? Metallic epoxy flooring is the way to go. From subtle, cloudy metallic flooring at nightclubs to high contrast black and silver metallic flooring in hotel lobbies, if you want your guests to say “Wow” when they walk through your front door, you should consider this flooring system.
Uniqueness is one of the defining aspects of metallic epoxy flooring. The randomness of epoxy flows means that no two of these flooring systems are alike, but that doesn’t mean you have no control at all! The type of pigment we use, the concentration of pigments, and the way we move the epoxy around will all influence the final look of your flooring, so we can create something that’s both unique and perfect for the aesthetic you’re looking for.
Durability & Low Maintenance
Metallic epoxy flooring is a resinous flooring system at its core; this means it has all of the advantages of traditional epoxy flooring. Our metallic epoxy flooring systems are:
- Seamless
- Easy to clean
- Resistant to wear and tear
We can choose from many different types of resinous material to add life, and longevity to your metallic epoxy flooring; they can easily last for 15-20 years!
Versatility For Different Spaces
Metallic epoxy flooring is extremely versatile; both the epoxy and the metallic pigments come in a wide array of different colours. From classic black and silver to green and copper, there are almost endless combinations, so no matter what your aesthetic may be, there’s a metallic epoxy flooring system that will be well-suited to your space. Metallic epoxy floors are commonly installed in:
- Lobbies
- Nightclubs
- Auto dealerships
- Galleries and museums
- Spas
- High-end retail spaces
How To Design A Metallic Epoxy Floor
Choosing The Right Colours
With metallic epoxy flooring, you’ll be choosing at least two colours: The colour of the epoxy and the colour of the metallic pigment. Flooring systems can be incredibly complex, and you can choose several colours of pigment for a single section of epoxy, and several different colours of epoxy to be integrated in different sections across your flooring.
When choosing colours, it’s important to remember that the metallic pigments are available in different concentrations; at high concentrations, those pigments can appear like marble veins, while at lower concentrations, they have a cloudier, more wispy effect. Choosing a pigment that contrasts well with your epoxy tends to be better in high concentrations, while complementary or subtle pigments are better for cloudy effects.
Patterns & Effects
There are almost countless patterns and effects you can achieve with metallic epoxy flooring; they’re usually grouped into a few different categories:
- Marbled (high contrast with distinct veins)
- Swirl (low or high contrast, flowing ribbons)
- Cloud/smoke (low contrast, wisps and swirls)
- Galaxy (high contrast, colourful pigments, lots of movement)
- Directional (high or low contrast, epoxy is intentionally moved in one direction)
- Layered (multiple metallic coats, plays well with light)
These different effects are useful in different spaces; you can create a classic marble look, or make visitors feel like they’re floating above a sea (or floating in space).
Coordinating With Your Space
Designing a more formal space? Marble, swirl, or directional effects might be best. Want a space that’s a bit more whimsical? You can get incredibly creative with galaxy, layered, and cloud effects. The colours you’ll choose can also match your branding and the overall aesthetics of your space and building!
Installation Tips For A Perfect Finish
There’s only one installation tip we can give you: Don’t try this yourself. Metallic epoxy flooring is among the most complex flooring systems; getting it right is tricky, especially if you have a particular effect in mind. Leave this one to the pros.
Maintaining Your Metallic Epoxy Floor
Metallic epoxy flooring has the same maintenance requirements as traditional epoxy flooring:
- Sweep with a soft-bristle brush daily.
- Clean spills immediately with a soft cloth.
- Place mats near entryways to prevent water, snow, salt, and other contaminants from being tracked onto your flooring.
- Mop your floor regularly with warm water and a gentle, manufacturer-approved cleanser.
- Inspect your floor monthly for signs of deterioration.
