WINNIPEG, MB: The former site of the Downtown Bay in Winnipeg is being transformed into a new, Indigenous-led project featuring affordable housing, gathering spaces, and commercial real estate. TCF West Concrete Finishing and Repair is proud to play a role in laying the groundwork for the project by providing flooring systems for the new project, named Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn.
The redevelopment of the former Downtown Bay building into Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn, which means “It Is Visible” in Anishinaabemowin, is being led by the Southern Chiefs Organization (SCO), which has contracted construction to PCL Construction. PCL has, in turn, contracted TCF West Concrete Finishing and Repair to work on the flooring systems in the building.
The building is 655,000 square feet; blueprints include a spacious atrium lit with skylights, a massive totem pole, 370 affordable rental units, offices for the Southern Chiefs Organization (SCO), a daycare, restaurants, and commercial office and retail spaces that will prioritize First Nations businesses and entrepreneurs.
“We are honoured to have a contract to work with PCL on the Wehwehneh Bahgahkinahgohn project,” said Michael Rosenblat, the owner of TCF West Concrete Finishing and Repair. “The project has stringent requirements for sustainability, aesthetics, and durability; though we do not want to give details on the project until it is complete, we are incredibly excited about the work we’re doing. We look forward to opening day, when we’ll be able to share the work that we, PCL, and our fellow contractors have done for the SCO on this beautiful building – one we’re sure the community will be as proud of as we are.”
